Reading DonutSMP Orders: Spreads, Depth, and the Trade That Can Disappear
Orders reverse the Auction House relationship. On AH, sellers choose an asking price. In /orders, buyers advertise what they want and how much they will pay. That makes the order book useful for seeing demand, but a spread is not automatically profit.
Compare the same unit
Open /orders or use /order <search>, then note the exact item, offered unit value, and remaining quantity. Compare that with the full acquisition cost for the same variant. Convert every total to a unit price before deciding.
Hypothetical example: 64 items cost 1,500 each, so acquisition costs 96,000. An order offering 2,000 each would pay 128,000 for all 64. The visible gross spread is 32,000, or 33.3% on capital. That result exists only if the order still has capacity and the whole batch is accepted at that value.
Understand the 2026 routing change
The June 2026 integration connected Orders with /sell and AH. When a compatible active order pays more than the normal server sell value, eligible items submitted through /sell can be routed to that order. AH listings can also interact with better-paying compatible orders, and creating an order can match qualifying AH supply.
This reduces some manual steps but not the risk. Another player can fill the order first. Remaining demand may cover only part of your batch. The buyer can cancel or change their position. Always review the live confirmation and verify the completed transaction, especially when moving several stacks.
Measure depth, not only the best price
The top order is the first layer, not the whole market. If it wants 20 items and you buy 320, most of your inventory needs a different exit. Calculate a blended result:
total expected revenue = sum of quantity accepted at each realistic price level
Do not apply the best unit price to more items than that order requests. Keep a buffer for changes between the moment you observe the book and the moment you deliver.
Two different strategies
Supplying an order means producing or acquiring items below the current buyer offer. Placing a buy order means waiting for other players to supply you, then using or reselling the stock. The second strategy can get a better entry price, but it locks balance and does not guarantee fulfillment.
For either strategy, liquidity matters. A thin market can show an attractive percentage while moving almost no volume. Track completed units per hour or day, not just margin per item.
Common execution failures
Players lose money by reading a total as a unit price, confusing similar item variants, committing their full balance to one order, and counting an unsold AH relist as revenue. Another mistake is assuming /sell always uses only the server base value; current routing may use a better compatible order, so the result needs checking rather than guessing.
Keep a short record of timestamp, entry source, unit cost, available order depth, completed revenue, and leftover inventory. A real order flip ends with cash back in the balance. Until then, the spread is only a proposal made by a market that can move without you.
